The Gambit by Peter Toran
Directed by Raine Bode
Peter Toran’s award-winning play centers on Rudolf Hess, the last surviving German military official convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials and the lone inmate at Spandau Prison in 1969. The play, which imagines a relationship between Hess and his Soviet prison guard, confronts the issue of individual responsibility in wartime—even the concept of “war crimes.” Part of Spotlight UB’s series of staged readings of modern plays that ask ethical questions of the audience.
