Variations Project - An Explanation for Playwrights

The purposes of this project are many and include:

- Raising awareness of the Run of the Mill Theater
- Creating a networking opportunity for local Baltimore theater artists
- Creating writing opportunities for local playwrights
- Exploring a common theme
- Engaging a variety of artists and theater companies in the creation of a unique theatrical production

The first phase of the production is "The Gathering."

Participants received an invitation to a gathering that is intended to be the inspirational source material for all playwrights. Everyone is encouraged to fully participate and not to simply observe. This year's gathering was November 12, 2005.

All interested playwrights (whether they attend the gathering or not) will have access to artifacts from the gathering, including video, photographs, and written responses to questions. You can download most of this information here. Please email variationsonfear@gmail.com to receive a DVD of footage from our "video confessional room" at the party. The DVD is completely free for all interested playwrights.

The second phase involves the playwrights developing and submitting their plays. To be considered, plays must be submitted to variationsonfear@gmail.com by 11:59 PM, February 24, 2006. PDF format is preferred, though DOC documents are also acceptable.

The third phase involves the development of selected plays, so if the deadline approaches and you do not have a polished script, send it anyhow.

Play Requirements

Playwrights may submit up to two original scripts: one ten minute script and one script of any length. Plays should somehow explore the theme of FEAR. They should also somehow be directly inspired by the source material. There are no demands, requirements, or requests regarding style. We do ask that you write the plays you want to write rather than writing plays that you think we might like.

When you are finished with the source material, feel free to pass it along to anyone else who is interested in participating in the project.
